#MCM- Andre Drummond, C, Detroit Pistons
-Hoover26 November 16
Andre Drummond is awesome. He is just plain amazing. This year, he is averaging 18.5 points and 19 rebounds per game. No, that isn’t a typo. 19 rebounds per game. Just let that sink in for a moment. The last person to do that for an entire year was Wilt Chamberlain. Yes, that Wilt Chamberlain.
Ok, so the Wilt comparison is clearly a bit early, but if anyone can match those rebounding totals, it’s Andre Drummond. Andre has the look of someone who could be a perennial All-Star, and make a lasting impact in the league. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, here. Drummond is only 22, and is just starting to polish his game. However, he seems to be progressing just fine. Think about this: Dwight Howard (one of Drummond’s idols) averaged 20.7 points and 14.2 rebounds in his age 22 season. Drummond is topping Howard’s rebound total by 4.8 rebounds!
Andre Drummond’s average draft position in espn.com fantasy leagues was 31st, which is after guys like Pau Gasol and Nerlens Noel. This could be due to the fact that his career free throw percentage is under forty percent, his assist numbers are very low (1.1 per game this year), or the fact that he plays for the Pistons. However, Drummond’s team actually looks like they could compete for a low playoff seed in the east this year. They are 5-5, they have some very strong scorers in Drummond and Reggie Jackson, and an emerging rookie in Stanley Johnson (for the record, I think he was a smarter pick for Detroit than Justise Winslow).
If you read my article on Odell Beckham Jr. (if not, check it out), you know I feel that certain players play with an electrifying “edge” that others seem to be defenseless against. Well, Andre Drummond has that edge. At times, it looks like he’s playing against high schoolers on the court, and you just have to stop and stare. Some players are good, and others are GOOD. I think it’s safe to say Andre Drummond is GOOD.
Andre Drummond is this week’s #MCM, and for good reason. I can’t stop watching this guy play, and I’m sure I am not alone!
