#TBT- Marcin Gortat, C, Washington Wizard

Some players in the NBA are reliably reliable. They have the ability to hit their averages pretty much every day without much variation. That is awesome for a team, if you can rely on someone to not have a poor performance when you need him to come through. Marcin Gortat has gotten that reputation over his career, as someone who is consistently solid and rather boring. However, of late, he has started to shed that label. He has blown up for some huge games this season, while not compromising his consistency with bad games. He has been a dream for fantasy owners, and will be a key if the Wizards intend to make a post All-Star push for an Eastern Conference playoff seed.
Marcin Gortat is the definition of throwback. The Polish Hammer is a double-double machine, with tremendous rebounding ability and top notch post scoring. He has only missed averaging a double-double in one of his eight seasons (his last season with the Suns, and he missed it by 0.1 RPG), and has a strong midrange game from the high post. He is also a really intimidating player on the floor, for what it’s worth. He once suggested the NBA adopt NHL-like rules that would allow players to settle on-court disputes with short fights. Seeing as Gortat is 6’11”, 240 lbs and the son of a famous boxer, I’m pretty sure not many people would partake in said fights with him.
Gortat was the 92nd player taken on average in espn.com drafts, making him the 18th center chosen (after guys like Robin Lopez and Gorgui Dieng). He is currently destroying that projection, having scored a combined 111 fantasy points is his last three games alone. His 25 double doubles this year is good enough for tenth in the NBA (espn.com), and we can certainly expect plenty more of those after the All-Star break.
Marcin Gortat is this week’s #TBT. He is a throwback player with a vintage style and an unmatched reliability that pays dividends for teams and fantasy teams alike.
