#TBT - Ryan Fitzpatrick, QB, New York Jets, Age 32
@IBiggs15 October 22
For #TBT this week, we are going to talk about the bearded wonder himself, Ryan Fitzpatrick. Throughout his career he has been as up and down as anyone in the league, but as of late he has been on the best upswing in his career. Fitzpatrick will never be an every week fantasy starter, but this year he is definitely someone you could rely on for a short fill-in period. Fitzpatrick is having as good of a year throwing the ball as he ever has, and with the New York Jets offense rather stable, his success will continue.
Let’s take a look at some of the teams Fitzpatrick has played on. He first got his chance to start in 2008 while filling in for the injured Carson Palmer. In 13 games Fitzpatrick threw for 1905 yards, 59.4% completion percentage, 8 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Those are some pretty lackluster numbers, but the team was not very good around him. That will be a theme in this piece. Chad Johnson was being double covered every play, and Cedric Benson averaged a meager 3.5 yds/att. Cincinnati also had a terrible line, allowing Fitzpatrick to be sacked 38 times in only 13 games. Fitzpatrick then moved on to Buffalo where, in 2011, he had his best year as a pro. In 16 games he threw for 3,832 yards, 62% completion percentage, 24 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions. Fitzpatrick had Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller at running back, and Stevie Johnson at wide receiver, as his best weapons. Neither Jackson or Spiller rushed for 1,000 yards, and Johnson was the only receiver to get over 700 yards. The Buffalo defense also gave up 434 points in 2011, which is 27.125 points per game.
Now Fitzpatrick is in New York and is having a very productive year. In the first five games this season, Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1,177 yards, 62.6% completion percentage, 9 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. Fitzpatrick was having success in Houston, before he broke his leg, and has picked right back where he left off. In his past 17 games he has thrown for 3,660 yards, 62.85% completion percentage, 26 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. Now that Fitzpatrick is in New York, he has arguably the best offense around him in his career.
Brandon Marshall isn’t a spring chicken anymore, but is 11th in the league in receiving, and is tied for third in receiving touchdowns with four. Eric Decker has only played four games, but has 233 yards and four touchdowns as well. Marshall and Decker’s specialty is finding the end zone, which is why they are so valuable to have as a QB. The Jets also have Chris Ivory, who is third in the league in rushing yards, with 460. Ivory is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, and looks to be a true workhorse. The Jets also have a fearsome defense up front and in the secondary. The line is led by Muhammad Wilkerson, while the secondary is locked down by Darrelle Revis. This team has already forced seven fumbles and eight interceptions in five games. Let’s not forget that Sheldon Richardson has only played one game. The point is that this is the best team Fitzpatrick has ever had around him, and could be in store for the best year of his career. Plus, who doesn’t love cheering for Fitzmagic?
Have fun and be safe for this slate of games this weekend. Any questions can be answered by myself or FF_Underground, Thanks for tuning in!
