#TBT- Deron Williams, PG, Dallas Mavericks
@Hoover__26 November 26
When this 31 year old point guard signed with Dallas, everybody assumed his minutes wouldn’t be what they once were for the often-injured Deron Williams. However, D-Will actually leads the Mavs in minutes per game, and is shooting his best percentage from three point range since 2007. He is also in the top 25 in the league in assists per game. Deron Williams looks a bit more like the D-Will of old this year than he did last year in Brooklyn.
Deron Williams has always been a really talented player. He was one of the top guards in the league during his time with the Jazz, and while he was never able to relive that with the Nets, he was still very good (despite injury after injury). Now, his scoring has dropped off to about fourteen points per game, but he can still drive past defenders and drop dimes to his talented teammates. According to fantasypros.com, Williams’ expert ranking has climbed since the beginning of the year, when his average draft position among major leagues was 92nd overall.
When a great player gets older, two things can happen. Some players, like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, are still valued highly for what they have done in the past, despite their dropoff. Other players, who were tremendous at one point or another in their career, fade out quickly when their numbers dip. What many people fail to realize is that when numbers drop off from their high perch, they are often still far above average. Deron Williams falls into that category, as his scoring has fallen in the past few seasons, but not far enough to take him out of his spot as a good fantasy option.
Don’t let his age fool you, D-Will is still going strong. He is seeing plenty of court time, and can give your fantasy team some throwback numbers!
