#TBT- Dwyane Wade, SG, Miami Heat
-Hoover26 November 5
In the age of free agency and blockbuster trades, it seems like we see star players shuffling from team to team on a daily basis. Very few times, however, will a star player commit himself to the success of one team. That is Dwyane Wade.
Wade has played his entire career for the Miami Heat, won three NBA championships, and been one of the greatest two-way players in NBA history. And, of course, a fantasy basketball must-have. However, the 33 year old Wade’s rankings were pretty low coming into this year, with Miami bringing in Goran Dragic and Justise Winslow, as well as returning offensive options Chris Bosh, Luol Deng and Hassan Whiteside. Not to mention the fact that Wade has been banged up over the last few seasons. Wade’s average draft position (espn.com) is about 68th, which is after shooting guards such as Danny Green and Kobe Bryant. However, Wade has proved the doubters wrong thus far by averaging 21.5 points, 4.8 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 1 steal through four games.
If you really look into Wade’s stats, you can see just how valuable he is to the Heat. His True Shooting Percentage has consistently been high (basketball-reference.com), and his Player Efficiency Rating and Estimated Wins Added are both top five in the league for shooting guards this year (espn.com). Wade is an extremely valuable piece for the Heat, as well as your fantasy team.
Aside from the numbers, Wade has helped the Miami Heat to victory in other ways as well. His understanding of salary and willingness to take pay cuts has allowed the Heat to sign many important free agents. His understanding of player roles allowed LeBron James’ “ball controlling” style of play to work with other star players such as himself on the floor. Wade is the consummate team guy, winning games with his play as well as his attitude. And while attitude and understanding might not count for much on a fantasy team, Wade has plenty to offer to your fantasy roster.
If you think aging is going to stop Dwyane Wade from being on the floor, you are sadly mistaken. While Wade’s minutes might be a bit low for a starter, his Usage Rate is the highest in the NBA at his position, and seventh overall. Wade takes advantage of every possession, which is invaluable for someone who isn’t playing the entire game. Wade’s decreased minutes could fool many into thinking his role has decreased. However, Wade is still the ignitor for the Heat (no pun intended).
Dwyane Wade is a real throwback guy, which makes him perfect for this week’s #TBT. He helps his team win in more ways than one, and can do the same for yours.
