#TBT - Antonio Gates, TE, San Diego Chargers, Age 35
-NM41 October 8
It's Thursday, which at the Underground means #TBT! My #TBT this week goes out to old man Antonio Gates. As we enter week 5 of this NFL season, Gates becomes eligible to play for the first time after being charged with a four game suspension. I'm here to tell you why you should be excited about him for the remainder of the 2015 season.
Where do you start with this guy? Just when we thought he was fading out of fantasy relevance, he had a superb 2014 season, catching 12 TDs. He also finished with a solid 821 yard season, good for second among tight ends in ESPN standard scoring.
His return couldn't have come at a better time in 2015, as San Diego faces three consecutive teams (PIT, GB, OAK) who are all well below average against tight ends. The Chargers are also dealing with several injuries to their pass catchers (Stevie Johnson, hamstring) (Malcom Floyd, concussion), which could open up even more opportunities for Gates.
Many fear that the rising talent Ladarius Green will keep Gates from having too much of an impact in 2015, but Gates is still the far superior threat in the red zone and his leadership and experience will keep him on the field over Green. He is currently owned in 75% of ESPN leagues, so if you one of the lucky few in a league where he is available I suggest you grab him as soon as possible.
