#MCM- Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers
-Hoover26 October 26
I can count on one hand how many rushing quarterbacks have had huge success in the NFL. Some of them transition to pocket passer as they progress (like Donovan McNabb), or are known for their scrambling ability (like Fran Tarkenton), but very few of them have managed to keep much of their college style in the NFL for long. However, Cam Newton, this week’s #MCM, looks primed to do just that. His 6’6” frame and 4.59 speed allows him to bulldoze rushers and burn would-be tacklers. His rookie year in 2011 was one of the finest in recent memory, and he is on pace to throw for 3,400 yards and twenty-four touchdowns this season. Due in large part to his play, his 6-0 Panthers are finally starting to look like a team poised for a playoff run. I just can’t gush enough about Newton on the field.
From a fantasy standpoint, Newton is the sixth ranked quarterback (per nfl.com scoring), and is a great QB1 option for the rest of the year. Newton’s Panthers have been one of the most consistent teams in the NFL , which means you can expect consistently good play from Cam. He currently leads all active players with 12.6 Yards per Pass Completion (pro-football-reference.com), and is tied with Andrew Luck for youngest player to make the top thirty in that stat. Cam is a big play guy, with the ability to make something out of a broken play. This is incredibly valuable to a fantasy team, as well as his actual team.
Newton has plenty of weapons on the offensive side, all with a propensity for electrifying the crowd with huge plays. He has 2007 first rounder Greg Olsen at tight end, who has receiver speed and elite blocking ability. Also drafted in ‘07, Ted Ginn Jr. has finally come into his own as a top receiving option. And with a power running combo of Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert, Carolina can certainly pound the ball and tire out a defense. Once that defense is tired, Cam can really go to work. His completion percentage and quarterback rating is highest in the second half so far this year (nfl.com), and he has yet to throw a fourth quarter interception in 2015.
Cam Newton is a beast on the gridiron. He is the face of his franchise, and he could be the face of your fantasy team!
