#MCM- Isaiah Thomas, PG, Boston Celtics
@Hoover__26 February 8
For some reason, fans seem to associate the most with the NBA’s shortest players. It could be because they are the same size as many of their fans. It could be because they have the most unlikely stories and the lowest probability to make it to basketball’s highest level, at least according to this:
For whatever reason, the NBA’s “little guys” seem to be universally beloved by the fans. The Boston Celtics’ 5’9” guard certainly is no exception. It seems like being short is absolutely no hindrance for Thomas, in fact it seems to be advantageous sometimes.
Thomas is one of those players that seem to be running on a different gear from everyone else. He is putting up career highs in almost every regular statistic (besides three point percentage, of which he is still shooting a very respectable .352%), including points per game, assists per game and rebounds per game. He also has 28 career blocked shots (in four years), including a memorable one this year on his former teammate DeMarcus Cousins. Thomas was elected to his first All-Star game this season, and for good reason. He is topping the 20 PPG mark, as well as 6.6 assists and a pair of three pointers. Like I said before, Thomas seems to use his size as an advantage on occasion. It’s easy to underestimate Thomas, even with his flashy numbers. And, if you didn’t know just how good he was, you probably would underestimate him. He has a wingspan of about 6’2”, which isn’t bad, but certainly doesn’t turn heads. However, as soon as you start to sleep on him, you better watch out for Thomas to explode for a huge rally.
When it comes to fantasy, Thomas is a must-own. He is averaging 37.4 espn.com fantasy points this season, which puts him tenth among point guards. But, that number doesn’t really paint the right picture. Point guards are having such a great year that it overshadows some of the really good guys at that position. Thomas may be tenth for point guards, but he is currently 25th overall in fantasy points per game. Seeing as he was the 49th player taken in espn.com drafts on average, I’d say he has more than reached value.
Isaiah Thomas is this week’s #MCM, and he certainly deserves it. Anyone at his size that can do the amazing things he does is more than deserving of a man-crush from me.
