#MCM- Derrick Williams, SF-PF, New York Knicks
@Hoover__26 January 25
Derrick Williams is an interesting player. He seems, at least to me, to have all the skill necessary to be a very good player in this league. He is a great athlete, always ready to perform a spectacular dunk. He is a decent long range shooter, which is a plus for his position. He can also rebound the ball quite well, averaging 7.6 boards per 36 minutes this season (his first with the Knicks). He is a career 71.1% free throw shooter, and is up over 75% this season. He also, for the record, has great hair (had to throw that in).
However, Derrick Williams isn’t really a mainstay in most fantasy leagues. That could be because he isn’t always getting big minutes. He only averages 16.7 minutes per game, which hurts his value. However, he has topped the twenty minute mark eight times and the thirty minute mark twice in his last ten games. He has also averaged 21.7 fantasy points on 0.55 PPFP (Points Per Fantasy Point) in that span (espn.com scoring). Williams could probably be a fantasy stud if he played 28 or 30 minutes per night. However, he has to deal with last week’s #MCM, Kristaps Porzingis, playing ahead of him in the rotation. Williams, however, isn’t one to squander the minutes he does get. He already has the second-most Offensive Win Shares of his career this season, and his True Shooting Percentage has never been higher (basketball-reference.com).
Derrick Williams is the kind of guy that could be something really special, if all goes well. He has Carmelo Anthony to hopefully help him progress, and is part of a Knicks team with quite a few solid prospects. Williams actually reminds me a bit of an early Carmelo, besides the fact that Melo was Denver’s engine, and Williams is currently a role player. But if Williams can develop more of a perimeter game, much like Melo did, then that coupled with his great athleticism could make him a serious threat.
This week’s #MCM might not be a fantasy star yet, but don’t count him out. You never know when Derrick Williams might explode...and dunk on somebody.
