#MCM- DeMarcus Cousins, PF-C, Sacramento Kings
@Hoover__26 February 15
In every sport, at every position, certain players seem to have achieved dominance over many of their peers. They appear to be able to do pretty much whatever they please, and almost nobody can even attempt to stop them. Often times, DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins seems to be one of those players. He currently averages 26.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.3 blocks and even 1.2 three point field goals per game, so there clearly isn’t much stopping Boogie from having his way on the court.
Possibly the most interesting stat of all of those is the three point shooting numbers. Cousins is attempting 16.5% of his shots from long range this season. That may not seem like much, but for DeMarcus Cousins standards, it’s humongous. If you add up (not average, but ADD UP) his percentages of shots taken from three point range in every other season he’s played (5 to be exact), it doesn’t even equal half of this year’s number (basketball-reference.com). And it isn’t like he’s just chucking up prayers from deep, he’s shooting the three-ball at a nearly 35% clip (which is equal to that of former #MCM Kristaps Porzingis and higher than guys like C.J. Miles). But, of course, Boogie isn’t known for his perimeter game. He is known for being one of the best interior big men in the game today (despite getting his shot rejected by another former #MCM, Isaiah Thomas). He also isn’t stricken with the same free throw shooting woes of other top big men (and very rarely has his name inserted in the infamous Hack-A-“insert name here”, made famous by Shaq. But Shaq wouldn’t want me to tell you that). Boogie is a career 73% free throw shooter, making it hard for a team to take advantage of the controversial intentional foul rules.
This week’s #MCM has had some tiffs with coaching staffs and fellow teammates before (including Rajon Rondo), and it has slightly tarnished his image with some. I’m not coming to his defense here, but I never really thought putting Boogie and Rondo on the same team was a brilliant idea. Nevertheless, hopefully Boogie can put his differences aside in the future and make a push for success in the very tough Western Conference.
This week’s #MCM is one of the most powerful, intimidating and talented players in the NBA. His fantasy value is through the roof right now, as he is averaging over 50 espn.com fantasy points per game this season. Cousins is the kind of player that you wish you had, but will have to give up an arm and a leg to get.
