#MCM- Lou Williams, PG-SG, Los Angeles Lakers
@Hoover__26 January
Lou Williams has been providing a spark off the bench of four different teams for pretty much his entire 11 year career. However, after finally being recognized as the finest bench player in the NBA last year (winning the Sixth Man of the Year award), Williams is putting together one of the best years in his career for his new team.
On average, Williams was the 36th point guard taken in espn.com drafts, putting him at 136th overall in average draft position. That puts him after guys like Frank Kaminsky III, Mario Hezonja and Kevin Martin. However, Lou has certainly proved he deserves more recognition. He is averaging 15.1 points per game (the second highest in his career), along with a few serious outbursts. Of his last six games, he has scored less than twenty points in only two of them. He also has games of 30 and 44 points (a career high) in that span. Lou is shooting over 80% from the free throw line, and went 15 for 15 from the charity stripe in his 44 point game. He can also shoot the three very well. In just his last six games, Lou has games of three, five and six made three pointers. Combine that with his solid steal numbers, and his value is strong in all formats.
Williams has been an extremely valuable addition for the Lakers, although it hasn’t really translated to their record. While Los Angeles is sitting at 8-31, Williams’ True Shooting Percentage is the highest it has been since his age 23 season, in which he played only 64 games for the Sixers. He has also gotten back to scoring off passes, and “catch and shoot” situations. After doing a good amount of his scoring off the dribble and unassisted last season, over 66% of Williams’ threes are assisted this year.
Lou Williams is this week’s #MCM, and is someone who you can never sleep on. He always has a chance to take over a game, regardless of the matchup.
